romney campaign is in now. but you can out-debate him. >> we go to kristen welker traveling with the president. we know that the president often has a pretty long day, long hours. news conferences. but how is the president trying to sharpen his message prior to wednesday? >> good morning, tom. i can tell you that's really one of the main goals of this debate camp here in nevada. the obama campaign trying to get the president to give shorter, sharper answers in part so that he can get all of this key points now. they say the president tends to be professorial sometimes. that's what they want to avoid. they want to give direct and crisp answers. also to avoid potentially looking condescending. that's one of the big things they're worried about here. so far president obama has had four mock debates with senator john kerry who is of course no stranger to presidential debates. he also i can tell you had one more practice session last night after president obama had a campaign event in las vegas. now, as you pointed

so did mitt romney. seeing what performances are like, i think the stakes are very high for both men. that's not his problem. his problem is that he is able to have one good day, not two good days. he needs to have a solid wednesday and be solid thursday, friday. otherwise it looks like another fluke. you prepared for one performance but your campaign is in disarray. you don't have answers to questions. you can't give details to policies. but you're making big promises. that's not going to work for governor romney. even if he has a good performance. i think with president obama, the challenge for him to, again, short answers kwb to the point. stay personable as we've seen him on the campaign trail. and call romney out on all the untruths, i'll say that kindly, that we've heard on the campaign trail. >> the one thing, perry, as karen talks about the romney campaign may have taken one step forward then two steps back at times. october certainly needs to be a stronger month than the last three months we've

he'll stand in as mitt romney. one thing we're reporting is both sides trying to lower expectations heading into the debate on wednesday, which is key for both candidates, alex. >> for themselves and increasing them for the other guy. that's what they're doing right now. thank you so much. let's bring in the political power panel. jonathan kapart, and chris cofinus and jackie gingrich kushman, author and daughter of newt gingrich and former adviser to her father's presidential campaign. welcome to the throuee of you. five days is all mitt romney has before the debate. the politico article everybody is talking about today say this isn't the chair or ho hum convention or the leaked video or distorted polls or the message or mormonism. it's mitt. does he have enough time for a real game change? >> you know, five days before the first debate, 40 days before election day people go around the country already are starting to vote early voting in a bunch of states across the country. it's unclear whether there's enough tim

obviously mitt romney is a good debater. he made it through the primaries and has had practice this year. barack obama, debating is not his greatest strength. he's a wonderful orator and has been a successful president. i think he'll do a good job, but i think it's going to be a competitive debate. >> do you think it's going to make a big difference for mitt romney to really show himself and really for these two men to be on the same stage? >> well, that helps mitt romney to be on the same stage with the president of the united states. there's no doubt. it always helps the challenger with the incumbent. the problem, though, is i think what susan pointed out and dana pointed out is that we really don't know who mitt romney is. so the question is which mitt romney will appear on the debate stage? and that will determine whether people will believe whatever candidate shows up at that time. >> all right. dana, real fast, though, president obama has a lot on his agenda. starting tomorrow, he's going to be here in new york city. a

romney. over the previous week we had tremendous media coverage of romney's 47% figure. that is something that was in the news, got tremendous coverage at the time that quinnipiac was in the field and a lot of other polls were in the field. >> both sides will tell you they don't pay attention to the polls, but sure enough when one side is down, they'll be fast to poo-poo them. >>> we have a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll out tonight with fascinating insights ahead of tomorrow night's debates. >>> up next, i'll talk to philadelphia mayor michael nutter about the breaking news on p.a.'s voter i.d. law being blocked. >>> governor romney is a self-proclaimed red sox fan. why did he make an investment in the yankees? that was me... the day i learned i had to start insulin for my type 2 diabetes. me... thinking my only option was the vial and syringe dad used. and me... discovering once-daily levemir® flexpen. flexpen® is prefilled. doesn't need refrigeration for up to 42 days. no drawing from a vial. dial the exact dose. inject by pushing a button. flexpen® is insulin

who has the most to lose, president obama or governor romney? >> certainly governor romney. the president ea's ahead. he's a good debater. this whole setting expectations by his team is very silly. he hasn't debated in a campaign recently, he's debated plenty. he knows hows to keep his cool on a national stage. the governor needs to turn the expectations around, and that's the problem he's having right now. he's got a lot of people saying, the debate's really going to change everything for him. it's his last chance. donors are going to go away if he doesn't do well. he's going to lose the support of establishment republicans who will start giving their money to senate candidates instead. it's a tremendous amount of pressure. so he's really got the expectations game that he's got to fulfill, and we'll see how he does. >> anne, this praise of mitt romney about an anecdote of being abandoned on a boat his hi grandkids. take a look and take a listen. >> i said, who's going to grab the rope? and i looked up, and there was mitt romney. so he pull ed me in, tied up th boat for me,

romney/ryan. romney/ryan. there you go. >> governor romney says that 47% of americans will vote for president obama because they are dependent on the government. this has sparked a lot of reaction obviously. what did he really mean by that? >> yes. he was obviously inarticulate at making this point. >> joining me in studio is msnbc contributor and daily beast columnist meghan mccain and son of the former president reagan. meghan, politico columnist wrote a satire call piece about romney and ryan and spoke to my colleague jansing. >> paul ryan is treated like a surrogate. he doesn't get to choose his own staff. he has a staff loyal to mitt romney around him every minute. he is told what to say and told what to do. that's fine as long as romney is winning. but romney is not winning. he's losing. and that unleashes the presidential candidate to act in his or her own way to unleash sarah palin to start attacking barack obama more. >> so meghan, as we all know. your dad certainly dealt with tensions within the tick
